The Caribbean is getting a new currency – say hello to the Caribbean Guilder (XCG)! The Caribbean Guilder is set to replace the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG), that is currently being used in Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

So, what’s the deal with this new money? Although it won’t completely change your vacation plans, there are a few key things that travellers should keep in mind.
Here’s everything you need to know:
When Is the Caribbean Guilder Coming?
The Caribbean Guilder will be introduced on March 31, 2025. The introduction will be gradual, with a dual circulation period where both currencies will be accepted until the old notes are fully phased out. From March 31, 2025 to June, 30, 2025, both XCG and ANG will be accepted. After June 30, 2025, only XCG will be the legal tender.
It’s also been announced that 1 Caribbean Guilder = 1 Netherlands Antillean Guilder, keeping the value steady to ensure a smooth transition for consumers and businesses.
U.S. Dollars Are Still Widely Accepted!
U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere, especially in Sint Maarten and most touristy areas of Curaçao. Credit cards are also widely used, but it’s good to have some Guilders on hand.
What to do with your leftover Netherlands Antillean Guilder?
If you are travelling in between the transition period, DO NOT come back to Canada with any of the Netherlands Antillean Guilder and exchange it to Canadian or U.S. funds before you return.
Exchanges can be made at the commercial banks only if you hold an account, for up to 12 months after the introduction of the Caribbean. This means that March 31, 2026, will be the last day to exchange ANG at commercial banks. After these 12 months, your Netherlands-Antillean Guilders can still be exchanged at the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten for up to 29 years – until March 31, 2055.
