Going into 2021, a whopping 80% of Canadians made travel plans for the year. After many endless months of border and travel restrictions, who can blame people for wanting to travel?
The good news is that on November 8, 2021, the land border between Canada and the United States reopened for fully vaccinated citizens!
We know there are many people in the Waterloo Region who’ll make the drive to the Canada-US border — especially for the holiday season. When that day arrives where we’re reunited with our friends to the South, here are some trips to consider taking.
Things to do just over the Ontario border
Bronners | Frankenmuth, Michigan
It’s always Christmas in Frankenmuth — a city renowned for its Bavarian-styled architecture and affinity for the holiday season. Frankenmuth is home to Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store. There’s also the Bavarian Belle Riverboat, Historical Museum, and Aerial Park…in other words, there’s something fun for everyone.
Gabriel’s Gate | Buffalo, New York
If you like wings, you’re going to like Gabriel’s Gate. If you like buffalo wings, you’re going to love Gabriel’s Gate. This wing heaven serves customers in a cozy tavern space filled with mounted animals and Native American statues, and it’s less than two hours from Waterloo!
Six Flags Darien Lake | Darien Lake, New York
In just 2.5 hours, you can reach one of the best amusement parks in North America. This iconic park features onsite campaign, a waterpark, a major concert venue, and a Halloween “Fright Fest” for those who enjoy a good scare.
Shopping | Grove City, Pennsylvania
When you type in “What is Grove City known for” into Google, you’ll quickly find out that this town 60 miles north of Pittsburgh is known for its exceptional shopping, and is frequented by many Canadians.
A Little Bit of Everything | Lake Placid, New York
Do you like beautiful scenery? Visit Lake Placid.
Do you like hiking, biking, and skiing? Visit Lake Placid.
Do you like small-town shopping? Visit Lake Placid.
Lake Placid hosted two Winter Olympics (1932 and 1980) and is tucked away in the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains. While you’re visiting, make sure to check out the Great Adirondack Brewing Company!
